Substation Protection + Control Design Upgrade

Substation Protection + Control Design Upgrade

A large steel manufacturer's substation was protected by vintage solid-state based power relaying that was vulnerable to nuisance tripping. Patrick redesigned the protection and control system utilizing state-of-the-art microprocessor SEL relays. Patrick adapted the existing 138kV switchyard protection and control scheme into an updated implementation, offering improvements to the existing scheme. Various updates were made for improved safety, access, and quality-of-life, such as separating differential zones, use of relays to gather equipment statuses, and display of statuses at a local HMI through network interconnectivity. Patrick also procured, provided construction support for, and commissioned the new relay panels. In an effort to minimize overall cost for the owner, Patrick was able to reuse the existing wiring from the field equipment, interconnect the existing and new wiring, and install new CTs in the switchyard to provide more granular differential protection.
